Dagbladet - 5Et kinderegg for musikkelskere.

CD: Ping er navnet på en kvintett som lager noe av det morsomste og merkeligste jeg har hørt på lang tid. Bandet har bak seg platene «It’s A Picnic» (2000) og et ep-samarbeid med No Life Orchestra (2004). «The Castle Massacre» er en forundringspakke, et merkelig oppkomme av musikk som spriker i mange retninger. Men det føles riktig . Bandet forskrever seg aldri der de byr på søt melodisk pop, progrock, metal, electronika, punkjazz og psykedelia. Innholdet på albumet er som et dusin kinderegg med mange overraskelser. Bandet må ha mange inspirasjonskilder, for jeg hører Zappa, The Residents, Beck og King Crimson – blant mange andre. Dette er for meg – hvis jeg skulle beskrive Harald Are Lund, NRKs uredde og på alle måter alternative musikkprodusent/programleder, med musikk. Pings musikk er sprudlende, uforutsigbar og motstrøms – akkurat som Harald Ares.

Adressa 5 Det er sjeldent man kommer over noen som gjør skrudd pop så spennende som Ping. (..) Resultatet imponerer, og ikke minst, det overrasker.

For er det noe bandet har evne til, så er det å leke seg. Derfor er det heller ikke gjort i en håndvending å båssette det de driver med. Men kjernen, og det som hindrer Pings musikk i å bli for utfordrende og langtekkelig, er de ypperlige melodiene. For enten det tar form av kunstpop/jazz («The Stupid Whistler»), funky soul («Comoneverybody»), tulleelektronika («Bow To The Beagle») – eller som oftest: alt på en gang – er det melodiene i bunn som er limet i puslespillet.

Som på de tidligere utgivelsene er det lett å høre at Ping liker Zappa. Men istedet for å etterape, låner de bare formen og fyller den med sitt eget innhold. Og nettopp derfor er dette en fascinerende plate. Det blir spennende å se hva bandet kan få til på scenen under Bylarm i Tromsø.

Aftenposten 4Kultalarm! The Castle Massacre, Ping. Helsprøtt, småmorsomt – og tidvis veldig, veldig bra.

Lydmessig spenner de også over et bredt lerret. Platen åpner med noe som låter som introduksjonsmusikken til et eller annet gammelt barne-TV-program fra 60- eller 70-tallet, komplett med tullevokal og pipende orgel.

De låter tidvis som vimsete engelske 60-tallsband, Zappa, Godley & Creme og The Residents. Mange sære referanser, altså, men vel verd en lytt – eller flere. Noen av låtene er nemlig farlig vanedannende, mens andre blir litt mye Snurre Sprett etter min smak, og vokalen blir i overkant “morsom”.

På tross av dette gir albumet – og bandet – fornemmelsen av fremtidig kultstatus.
